This week we are reading The UltraMind Solution: Fix Your Broken Brain by Healing Your Body First, by Mark Hyman MD. There is also a website by the same name. Sometimes we take a break from business books and read fiction, or in this case a book centered on a healthy mind. It ties in nicely to our Keep It Simple, Stress Free life we spoke of on Tuesday.
Dr. Hyman suggests that 92% of Americans are deficient in one or more nutrients at the minimum daily level. Let that sink in. Imagine what would be possible if we were all well nourished! Dr Hyman is dedicated to identifying and addressing the root causes of chronic illness through a groundbreaking whole-systems medicine approach called Functional Medicine. He is a family physician and through his private practice, education efforts, writing, research, and advocacy, he empowers others to stop managing symptoms and start treating the underlying causes of illness, thereby tackling our chronic-disease epidemic.
Disease, or Diss Ease, is a disconnection from our sense of place in the world.
In this book, Dr. Hyman uses the latest scientific discoveries to assess the influence of environmental toxins and the food we eat on our physical and mental health. He provides details about his 6 week program to cleanse and detoxify one’s body: no sugar, no processed flours, avoid food allergens, additives, toxic metals, etc. For some people, knowing what to eat is the hardest part of a lifestyle makeover. If that is true for you, feel free to download this PDF of a 6 week eating plan created by Dr. Hyman. Being healthy in mind and body couldn’t be easier!
Dr. Hyman suggests there are 4 steps everyone needs to take to have an UltraMind:
- Eat right for your brain
- Tune up your brain chemistry with supplements
- Start the UltraMind lifestyle, which is exercise, sleep, relaxation, and training your brain
- Living clean and green
You thoughts have real, measurable effects on your brain and your body. Didn’t we just say that on Tuesday? Check out this video of Dr. Hyman discussing this very thing:
Hit the pause button!
This may seem too simple, but many swear by it. However it is controversial because Dr. Hyman suggests that all “mind disorders,” like depression and ADHD, are basically the same. The only way to really test his theory is to test his lifestyle “diet” listed above. He suggests to try it for 6 weeks and see if you feel better. If not, you have only devoted yourself for 6 weeks. But what if a healthy, stress-free, happy lifestyle is at the end of this 6 weeks? Isn’t it worth it?
Your brain can thrive, you just have to provide the right conditions. And if your brain thrives, imagine what is possible!
