Every Monday morning we showcase a business that we think exemplifies outstanding customer service and business acumen. Today’s spotlight is on Coffee By Design. Alan Spear and Mary Allen Lindemann, the married couple who co-own Portland’s Coffee By Design, have been serving coffee since 1994, making this their 19th year in business. They started with one Portland location. They now have 4 locations, with a 5th on the horizon, and employ over 40 employees. I love coffee, I think we have established that, and any coffee shop that can stay in business for 19 years has my stamp of approval.
Not only does Coffee By Design (locally known as CBD) serve terrific coffee, take pride in their customer service, and boast remarkable sales (their gross revenue for 2012 were between $6 million and $7 million!), they also do things that set themselves apart from most businesses. It’s a long list, and they have been highlighting some of these distinguishable traits on their blog. One thing, they are committed to providing custom manufacturing positions within our micro-roastery, keeping Maine manufacturing alive. Another aspect we love is their commitment to the environment. From composting over 100,000 lbs of coffee grounds a year to installing solar panels, they are an environmentally conscious business. Take a look and see why this is one local business we are proud to support.
Don’t forget to wish Coffee by Design a happy 19th birthday this month! They’ve got a delicious birthday blend for sale and tees too. Happy birthday CBD!
Here is a great article about CBD history and future location.
